Degrees Structure

Admission Requirements
  • The basic academic/education requirements along with minimum IELTS score to take up postgraduate studies in UK, for different courses has been given below:
    • Pre-Master’s Courses: An undergraduate degree plus IELTS score of 5.0 to 5.5.
    • Postgraduate Certificates or Diplomas: An undergraduate degree plus IELTS score of 6.5 to 7.0, or a Pre-Master’s course.
    • Master’s Degree: An undergraduate degree with first or upper second class scores plus IELTS score of 7.0, or a Pre-Master’s course.
    • Masters of Business Administration: An undergraduate degree with first class scores, 2-3 years of work experience plus IELTS score of 6.5 to 7.0.
    • Doctorate of Philosophy (PhD): A Master’s degree plus IELTS scores of 6.5 to 7.0.
  • The students who want to take up postgraduate courses in management (MBA) need to appear in Graduation Management Admission Test (GMAT) and score well in it. Without a good GMAT score (700 or more for top universities), admission in management based courses in UK won’t be allowed.
  • For management related courses like MBA, the universities in UK take up only those students with 2-3 years of prior work experience. A work experience certificate or letter is a must along with a detailed resume mentioning the career goal, position(s) held over the years.
  • All universities require complete transcripts/mark sheets/related documents of the previous academic records to be submitted at the time of the submission of the application form, along with the letter of recommendation and a statement of purpose.
  • It should be clearly mentioned on the statement of purpose why the student has chosen the particular stream and how he/she will manage financially during the stay in UK. Letter of recommendation should preferably be from the person who has taught the student, highlighting the strengths and weaknesses of him/her and why he/she would excel in the field.
  • The IELTS English proficiency exam is conducted by the British Council in over 125 countries and therefore can be taken by the student in his/her home country.
 
Application Procedure
The procedure of getting admission into a postgraduate course in one of UK’s university requires a student to fill in the admission form of the respected university or college and submit it online or via air-mail, along with the details and documents of the previous academic record including the scores of IELTS exam, duly attested by the registrar.
  • Ideally, it’s best to start with all the searching and selecting the preferable universities or B-schools a good one year before the session.
  • Students have the option of either applying online or through post. In both the case, the supporting documents will have to be posted through registered mail.
  • The applications and supported documents need to be compiled together in advance to avoid any hassles during the application procedure.
  • The closing dates of submitting the applications can be found out at the universities’ or colleges’ official websites.
  • After the university or college has approved the application, the students can then proceed with fulfilling the visa formalities.
 
Cost of Postgraduate Education
The tuition fees for postgraduate courses in UK vary from the type of course to the university or institution applied in. The average total tuition fee per academic year can range from:
Arts and Humanities Courses: £7,000 to £12,000
Science Courses: £7,500 to £25,000
Clinical Courses: £10,000 to £33,000
MBA: £4,000 to more than £34,000
Along with the above mentioned tuition fees, the average cost of living per academic session also needs to taken into consideration which varies according to which part of UK the student is living in. It may be anywhere between £6,000 and £12,000 for an individual. These costs include accommodation, food, travel (bus/subway), entertainment (cinema/eating out/sports), and other (books/clothing/personal hygiene/telephone calls) and also varies according to person’s lifestyle.
