Who Requires a Visa?
  • Students, intending to take up a study program in any educational institution in Sweden for more than 3 months of duration, should obtain a residence permit valid for one year, after which they have to get it renewed until the course is completed.
  • For a stay less than three months, no residence permit is required. However, students have to obtain a valid visa for entering Sweden.
  • Nationals of Nordic countries are exempted from acquiring a permit or visa to enter Sweden and seek admission in a Swedish university or college. They only have to register with the Swedish Migration Board on arrival in Sweden.
  • All international students belonging to non-Nordic and non-EU/EEA countries have to apply for visa and residence permit before coming to Sweden.
  • Members of Nordic and EU/EEA countries include Austria, Iceland, Belgium, Lichtenstein, Cyprus, Norway, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain, United Kingdom, Romania, Bulgaria, and Slovakia.
 
Application
It is important to seek admission in an accredited university in a full-time study program before you apply for a visa to Sweden. After you have obtained a certificate of admission to a university, you can begin the process of applying for a student visa. Visit the Swedish embassy or consulate in your country of origin or country of domicile and get the application form, along with the list of documents to be submitted with the application. But before you present your application to the embassy or consulate, you have to deposit a non-refundable Residence Permit application fee of SEK 1000, equivalent to your local currency, in the bank account of the Swedish embassy in your country. Also you will not be granted the permit unless you make the payment of the first installment of the tuition fees. It is best to apply at least 6 to 8 weeks before your departure to Sweden in order to get your visa issued in time. The embassy or consulate will send your application to the Migration Board in Sweden which will take process your application and grant you visa and residence permit. Thereafter, the embassy or consulate will notify the decision to you.
 
Documentations Required
For obtaining a student visa or residence permit, the embassy or consulate requires certain documents for checking your eligibility to study in Sweden.
  • Filled-in application form
  • Letter of admission from the higher education institution indicating that you have been enrolled for full-time studies (original & copy)
  • 2 copies of educational degrees and certificates from your school last attended, attested by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the country you have studied.
  • 2 copies of the pages of your valid passport showing your personal details.
  • A copy of comprehensive health insurance that is valid in Sweden
  • Bank statement or copy of your grant/scholarship showing that you have sufficient funds to support your study and stay in Sweden for the entire duration of your course. An amount of SEK 7300 per month for ten months is set by the Migration Board. Besides, if you desire to take your family along, you should have an additional SEK 3500 per month for your spouse and SEK 2100 per month per child, at your disposal.
  • Receipt of the payment of the application fee
  • 2 passport-size photos not older than 6 months
