University Admission in Singapore

Right since its independence from the Britishers, Singapore, slowly but surely has been growing in terms of economy, infrastructure, and quality or life. And off late, it has grown manifold in the consciousness of a global student base who think about taking up university education in an international study destination other than the traditional UK, US, or Australia. Singapore has become the educational hub not primarily because of the affordable price of education for the university level courses (sure that is a factor too), but due to the strong education system that fosters all round development of the students. The strength of Singapore’s education system lies in a broad based curriculum that is taught with innovation and in English: the unanimously believed business language of the world. Singapore currently has 3 local government-funded universities, few privately-funded universities, and foreign universities, all boasting of state-of-the-art teaching infrastructure and an updated syllabus. University Admission in Singapore
 
Eligibility
The students must have completed higher secondary schooling or pre-university education and gained a passing certificate of GCE “O” level examination from Singapore or an equivalent qualification of minimum 12 years of schooling from an overseas country to apply for the undergraduate courses in Singapore. And to apply for postgraduate studies, students should have completed minimum 3-4 years of undergraduate studies depending on whether a student wants to take up master’s degree program or a doctoral degree. This 4-year bachelor’s degree offered is similar to that of bachelor's of engineering or technology offered in India. And for those looking to apply for an MBA course in Singapore universities are required to hold on a minimum: a bachelor’s degree and 2-3 years of work experience. Also, since English is the medium of education in Singapore; students must be fluent in all aspects of English: reading, writing, speaking, and listening.
 
Searching
Mostly, the academic session in Singapore universities start by the month of August and that the candidates are advised to arrive two weeks before the commencement of the semester. To be on the safer side, the candidates should start with the course and university searching at least 6 months prior to closing date of applications. This time gap is needed to prepare for and appear in a few exams that students need to clear, making financial and accommodation arrangements in Singapore, and acquiring student’s pass to legally land in Singapore. For the searching part, students can explore each university’s official website and even request for a brochure to be mailed to them. Any queries can be cleared up by contacting the university via mail or telephone. After thorough searching, the students can prepare a final short list of the selected universities and courses and move ahead with the application procedure.
 
Application Forms
The application form can be downloaded from the university’s official website or can be requested to be mailed to candidate’s residential address. There are few universities/institutions that accept only the online completion and submission of the application form. Priority is given is to those candidates who submit the applications well ahead of the closing dates.
 
Admission Tests
Competitive Examination: Students who’re seeking admission in Singapore universities may have to take an entrance of competitive examination, conducted and evaluated by the university itself. Good scores are expected out of students.
GMAT: Students who’re seeking admission either in MBA or in postgraduate course (masters or doctoral) with management related subjects are required to appear and score well in the Graduate Management Admission Test.
IELTS/TOEFL: Students who’ve not had English as a medium of education are required to take IELTS/TOEFL English proficiency exam. The minimum score requirement can be inquired from the university.
 
Application Requirements
  • Depending on the course the students want to apply for, they should submit the certified copies of the required transcripts/mark sheets/certificates of the minimum qualification that is asked.
  • If not already, the students should get the above mentioned documents translated into English language from an individual or authority recognized by the authority of a student’s home country.
  • Students should also get the marks converted according to the grading system that is followed in Singapore. School/University/College authorities can be contacted for the same.
  • Scorecards of IELTS/TOEFL and GMAT exams are also to be submitted to the university authorities. Although the minimum score varies according the university/institution; it’s advised that, for competitive reasons, students should look to score above the minimum scores asked.
  • For students seeking admission in an MBA course, it’s absolutely mandatory to have a minimum of 2-3 years of work experience. A detailed CV along with letter of recommendation, from the professors with their contact information mentioned on the same are to be submitted to the university or institution.
  • For students seeking admission in a doctoral program, letters of recommendations and a statement of purpose (personal essays) mentioning the reasons as to why the student wants to pursue the particular field of study in doctoral degree should be submitted.
  • Apart from the above requirements, the students may also be asked to submit certified copies of their birth certificates or identity proofs and medical reports if they have or have had any illnesses or disabilities.
 
Follow Up
After the applications have been received by the university, they’ll proceed with the assessment and get in touch with the student within few days. Positive assessment will lead up to candidates getting an interview call from the university. The interview may be telephonic, video, or onsite. If the university is convinced of the student’s strong candidature, an acceptance letter or letter of offer will be granted to the student which he/she has to sign and send back to the university along with the fees. It is after this that the university will send a package to the students and the students can then proceed with applying for a student’s pass to go pursue university studies in Singapore.
