Who Requires Visa?
Any visitor, entering China and staying here for more than 48 hours, requires a valid visa for the duration of the stay. Depending upon the visitor’s identity, purpose of visit to China, and passport type, visitors are issued one of the four categories of visa by the Chinese visa authorities. Diplomatic, Courtesy, Service, and Ordinary visa are the four major types of visa issued. The Ordinary visa is further classified into eight divisions, marked by Chinese phonetic letters, namely, L, F, X, G, Z, C, J, and D. Students traveling to China for the purpose of studying or intern practice for a duration of six or more months, are required to obtain an X-visa from the Chinese embassy.
Visa Application
Applications for visa should be submitted about one month in advance from your intended date of travel to China. Avoid applying for a student visa three months earlier from your intended date of arrival in China, as this may lead to the expiry of the already issued visa or getting too late to get a visa issued before your planned date of departure to China. You will be asked to provide additional documents supporting your eligibility of receiving a student visa, along with the visa application form, by the consular office. Complete the visa application form and sign it. In case you are below 18 years of age, the form should be signed by one of your parents. It is highly significant to fill the application form correctly, failure of which can cause a delay in processing or refusal of the requested visa. Applications must be made in personal to the visa office of the Chinese Embassy or Consulate-General in the country or state you reside in. The authorities do not accept mailed applications and hence, will be refused altogether. As such, if you are unable to visit the office in person, send someone else on your behalf to the visa office of the Chinese Embassy or Consulate-General to submit the visa application file.
Necessary Documentations

Valid Passport: You are required to submit your original passport, valid for 6 months from the date of application, with sufficient blank pages for issuing the visa. Pages for endorsements or amendments will not be used as a visa page.

Visa Application Form: A duly completed visa application form must be included in the visa application file. The form should be signed either by the applicant himself or by his parents/guardians.

Passport Photograph: One recently-taken passport photo should be affixed to the visa application form. Avoid pasting life photos, copied photos, and digital photos printed on ordinary paper as they are not acceptable by the visa authorities.

Physical Examination Certificate: Foreign students who will be staying and studying in China for more than one year have to provide a Physical Examination Certificate for Foreign Citizen.

An approved original and a copy of “Visa Application Form for International Students” (JW201 or JW202) issued by the Ministry of Education of China

A letter of admission (original and a copy) from the Chinese university or college in which you have taken admission

If you have ever been issued a Chinese visa previously, submit a copy of the most recent Chinese visa and picture page of the passport bearing the visa. If the visa was issued to a previous passport, a photocopy of the canceled passport’s visa information page should be provided.

China Visa Validity
Most of the times, Chinese student visa is issued for a single entry and is valid for three months from the date of issue. As such, students are required to register their visa at the local public security department within thirty days from their arrival in China, to avoid illegal stay. Students are required to avail residence permit for the entire period of study through the formalities demanded by the office. The period of stay can be extended or re-entry permission can be requested from this office.
Chinese Visa Processing Time
It usually takes about 4 to 5 business days to process the Chinese visa applications, for a Regular Visa. However, most locations offers Rush 24-hour Visa and Emergency same-day Visa service, though at an additional fee cost. Depending upon the service you ask from the embassy and your nationality, you can be charged an application fee ranging from 300 Chinese Yuan to 1100 Chinese Yuan.
