Degree Structure
One needs to dedicate three years of comprehensive study and classroom lectures to complete undergraduate study and qualify for the bachelor’s degree in Germany.The program is structured into modules wherein each module consists of thematically related courses in the form of lectures, seminars, and practical sessions, to make up one academic unit. One module can stretch over a maximum of two semesters, undertaken through six to ten hours of academic study per week. On successful completion of one module, students are awarded with credit points, which are accumulated and totaled at the end of the program study. Students are required to secure the minimum credit points to get eligible for receiving the bachelor’s degree. As a general rule, 180 to 240 credit points are desired for completing undergraduate studies and being honored with a bachelor’s degree. Undergraduate studies are offered in both languages, English and German, but it is better to enroll in a German language course for an added advantage.
 
Academic Calendar
Higher studies in Germany are divided by two semesters - summer and winter. The summer semester runs from April until September while the winter semester begins in October and ends in March. Both the academic sessions declare some holidays which are utilized by the students for submitting research tests, research papers, and undertaking examinations.

Admissions Requirements
 
  • Admission to a bachelor’s degree program in Germany requires 13 years of formal school education. This means students who have studied school for 12 years should take up a one-year bridge program, which can only be undertaken by students with excellent academic record and basic knowledge of German language.
  • On completion of the bridge program, students have to qualify in an assessment test, called Feststellungsprüfung, in order to seek admission in an undergraduate program in a German university.
  • There are universities who accept scores of certain entrance examinations held by some countries. Students who have successfully qualified in these tests are exempted from writing the assessment test.
  • Students who have completed two years of undergraduate study in their home country are exempted from taking the assessment test, but have to show proficiency in German language.
  • Officially certified copy of certificates obtained from the school last attended, clearing stating the subjects and grades awarded, with an officially certified copy of a translation is a must.
  • Proof of passing secondary school from a recognized institution through a leaving certificate is required
  • Study programs that have English as their medium of instruction require TOEFL scores to judge the candidate’s English language proficiency.
  • Proof of German language proficiency in case the course taken up has German as a medium of instruction.
  • Proof of medical/health insurance
  • A valid passport and student visa

Application Procedure
 
  • Conduct research of the various universities offering courses of your choice in Germany through the internet and their respective websites.
  • Go through the eligibility and admission requirements for each selected university and check whether you qualify with its demands.
  • Draft an email or send airmail to the university requesting for application information and forms. As an alternate, you can even download the application form from the university’s website and use it as any regular form.
  • Certain German universities also have online application facility, wherein you can fill an online form asking for sending you the application material.
  • Depending upon each university’s requirements, gather all the documents and certificates.
  • Keep a check on the last dates for applying and send your applications before the deadlines. Generally, the closing date of application for the winter semester is July 15th and for the summer semester, it is January 15th.

Pursuing an undergraduate degree course in Germany costs about 500 Euros per semester as tuition fees. In addition, various universities charge 50 Euros per academic term for administration and 40 to 70 Euros per academic term towards student social services.
